Open Day information for pilots
For public | Open Day general

We welcome all visiting pilots over the Strathaven Balloon Festival Weekend, especially for our Open Day on Sunday August 30th.

We hope the following information may be useful.

  • PPR is not required, but is appreciated. There are no landing fees this weekend and there will be hot food and drinks available all afternoon on the Sunday.

  • Please note: the airfield will be closed to all traffic from 2pm until 4pm on Sunday to allow for a radio-controlled model aircraft display, hovercrafting and a power kiting demonstration.

  • Please follow marshal's guidance when parking and have a marshal in attendance before starting up. Members of the public will be on and around the airfield and may not be as aware of the dangers of propellers as you!

  • Strathaven Airfield uses Safetycom (135.475mhz) as its radio frequency. Please make blind calls to Strathaven Traffic and do not expect a response. Be aware, more wind sensitive aircraft may be using the cross-wind runways while larger aircraft may need the length of the main runway.

  • Standard overhead joins are preferred. Be aware that Glasgow's ATZ is just two miles away and they often ask traffic to remain clear of their Class D and below 2,000ft on the QNH (with our elevation of 847ft, and a circuit height of 1,000ft, our circuits are at 1,847ft on Glasgow's QNH). So keep an eye out for passing traffic routing straight through the circuit!

  • Our windsock is ex-Glasgow Airport and is horizontal at 30kts. The online weather station on this site is updated every five minutes - however, it is on the roof of the new hangar and is sheltered from easterly winds so will under-read easterly winds quite significantly.

  • Strathaven Airfield is at 847ft above sea level, so the 1,000ft wind on the Form 214 gives a good forecast. In southerlies, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Prestwick Airports will all have a significantly lower wind in their METARs than Strathaven.

  • To get Strathaven's QFE, simply subtract 31mbs from Glasgow's QNH.
